The TNP3 Closing Conference was held at the Université Rennes 2 on 22-23 September 2006.
It brought together some 120 representatives of partner institutions and organisations, students, graduates, external experts and stakeholder representatives. At the Conference, the outcomes of the three-year project, notably the results of the Europe-wide consultation conducted among language industry companies and other enterprises, graduates, and non-university educational stakeholders were presented. Participants discussed recommendations for higher education programmes and offerings, as well as for structured consultation and collaboration between universities on the one hand and employers, graduates, and other providers on the other. The sub-project working groups also presented their proposals for multilateral projects. These recommendations and proposals form the backbone of an action plan, which project partners, together with new partners, hope to implement over the coming years.
Keynote speakers included Daniel Binet, Director General of the Zhendre company, France, Pedro Chaves, responsible for Key Activity 2 “Languages” in the EU’s new Lifelong Learning Programme, Brian Fox, Director at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Interpretation, and Annie Lhérété, Inspecteur général for modern languages in the French Ministry for Education and Research.
Among the highlights of the Conference was a panel of invited students and graduates on “Higher education language studies – students’ expectations and graduates’ experiences”.
In addition to the project’s mainstream themes, the Conference featured workshops on Arabic language and culture and on education and research. Project partners were particularly pleased to welcome fifteen students from across Europe, nominated by schools of translation and interpretation, ESIB – The National Unions of Students in Europe, and ESN – the Erasmus Student Network.
